Wolfgang is Reader in Contemporary Christianity and Pentecostal Studies at the University of Birmingham, where he also directs the Centre for Pentecostal and Charismatic Studies.

His research interests include Pentecostal and Charismatic movements, Pentecostal theology, pneumatology, ecclesiology, ecumenical studies, and the intersection of theology and science. He is coeditor of the series Christianity and Renewal-Interdisciplinary Studies (Palgrave Macmillan) with Amos Yong and Systematic and Constructive Pentecostal Theology (Bloomsbury) with Daniela Augustine. He is the author of several books, most recently, "Pentecostal Theology: Living the Full Gospel" (Bloomsbury T&T Clark), "Pentecostalism: A Guide for the Perplexed" (Bloomsbury), "Beyond Pentecostalism: The Crisis of Global Christianity and the Renewal of the Theological Agenda" (Eerdmans) and two volumes of "Pentecostalism and Christian Unity" (Pickwick) documenting Pentecostal involvement in ecumenical conversations. He is currently working on a systematic proposal of "Pentecostal Theology".
